The Last Thing He Told Me

Texas functions as more than a place-name in Hannah’s investigation: it is the distant jurisdiction that raises questions about Owen and the landscape that brings her to the Sanctuary, Nicholas Bell’s private family retreat. The state’s clues arrive first as fragments of information, then as a destination with a concealed history.

Clues from Texas

Hannah challenges Grady Bradford over why a U.S. marshal based in Austin, Texas, has traveled to San Francisco to seek someone who is not a suspect. She also presses him about whether Owen called him and why there are no records of Owen Michaels before he arrived in Sausalito. Texas is thus associated with the unanswered questions around Owen’s identity and the marshal’s involvement, rather than with a settled explanation.

A number and an award

While Hannah is waiting for a return call from Jules, her phone rings from an unfamiliar number with a 512 area code, which she recognizes as Texan. The caller begins speaking mid-sentence, as if Hannah were already expected to be listening; the excerpt leaves the caller’s identity and the reason for the call unresolved.

Another Texas clue emerges through Hannah’s memory of a newspaper clipping at The Never Dry. Its photograph shows Kate in a gown and Charlie in a tuxedo, flanked by Meredith Smith and Nicholas Bell. The headline reports that Nicholas received the Texas Star Award. The clipping gives Hannah a concrete connection between Nicholas and Texas, prompting her to search his name and recognize its significance.

The Sanctuary in Texas Hill Country

Later, Charlie drives Hannah northwest of the city, past Mount Bonnell and into Texas Hill Country. They travel toward a private estate on the lake, a setting whose stillness and seclusion contrast with the investigation’s accumulating disclosures. Charlie explains that his parents bought the property a couple of years earlier, in the year Nicholas got out of prison and the year before his mother died.

The estate had been Meredith’s dream house. After her death, Nicholas remained there alone. Hannah later learns that the property cost ten million dollars; at the driveway, a plaque identifies its name as The Sanctuary, chosen by Meredith. Its scale, beauty, and privacy give the name a literal force, while Nicholas’s solitary residence ties this Texas refuge to the family history Hannah is trying to understand.
